W&L Golf Finishes 10th of 17 at Guilford O'Briant Memorial

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee golf team finished in 10th place out of 17 teams that competed at the Guilford Tom and Bettie O'Briant Memorial Tournament held at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Generals shot a second round score of 317 to finish with a two-day score of 312-317—629.  Guilford finished as the team champion with a score of 308-284—592, eight strokes better than any team in the field.  Junior Mat Hennick of Guilford claimed individual medalist honors after finishing the event with a two-over par score of 69-73—142.

Washington and Lee was led by senior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster), who finished in a tie for 17th place with a 76-76—152.  Sophomore Will Hatfield (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) placed in a tie for 32nd with a 78-79—157 and junior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) shot an 80-80—160 to tie for 42nd overall.

First-year John Torell (Bronxville, N.Y./Brunswick School) tied for 61st (78-86—164) and senior Tom Bowden (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) finished 73rd with an 87-82—169.

Washington and Lee has now completed the fall portion of its schedule.  The Generals will return to competitive action on Feb. 21-22 as it takes part in the Huntingdon College Invitational held at the Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery, Ala.
