W&L Golf Ends Day 1 in Sixth Place at O'Briant Memorial

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee golf team shot an opening round score of 312 and resides in sixth place out of 17 teams following the first day of competition at the Guilford Tom and Bettie O'Briant Memorial Tournament held at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Bridgewater and Greensboro's "A" team are atop the standings following the first day as both compiled a team total of 305.  Methodist is third with a 306, followed by Guilford (308), Greensboro's "B" team (311) and W&L (312).  Guilford junior Mat Hennick leads the individual portion of the event with a one-under par 69.

Leading the way for W&L is senior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster), who shot an opening round 76 and is tied for 11th-place.  Sophomore Will Hatfield (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and first-year John Torell (Bronxville, N.Y./Brunswick School) are both tied for 18th with a 78, while junior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) is tied for 31st with an 80.  Senior Tom Bowden (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) rounded out the W&L competitors with an 87 and is tied for 73rd.

Action continues on Tuesday with the final round from the Cardinal Golf and Country Club.
