W&L Golf Finishes Third at Virginia State Intercollegiate

WINTERGREEN, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team finished third out of nine teams at the Virginia State Intercollegiate held at the Stoney Creek Golf Club in Wintergreen, Va., over the weekend.

The Generals shot a two-day score of 298-309—607 to finish a single stroke behind both Randolph-Macon (305-301—606) and Roanoke (301-305—606).

Individually, Washington and Lee claimed the top two golfers as senior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) and junior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) finished Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.  Gavrich carded a four-under par score of 70-70—140, while Anthony finished level par with a score of 71-73—144.

Sophomore Will Hatfield (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) shot 79-79--158, while first-years Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and John Torell (Bronxville, N.Y./Brunswick School) rounded out the W&L competitors in the field.  Cottrill shot 78-90--168 and Torell carded a 91-87--178.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Oct. 25-26 as it competes in the Guilford/Tom O'Briant Invitational held at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
