W&L Golf Ties for Second Place at Va. Intercollegiate Tourney

WINTERGREEN, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team carded a two-day score of 311-308—619 to tie for second place out of 12 teams at the Virginia Intercollegiate Golf Championship completed on Monday at the Stony Creek Golf Club in Wintergreen, Va.

Host Randolph-Macon was the tournament champion after posting a score of 300-315—615 (+39).  The Generals tied for second with Christopher Newport (309-310—619, +43) and Hampden-Sydney (310-309—619, +43).  Lynchburg’s Mike Butzgy finished as the individual medalist after firing a three-under par score of 70-71—141.

Senior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and junior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) both paved the way for the Generals, finishing in a tie for 11th place overall.  Womble shot 79-74—153, while Gavrich posted a 77-76—153.

Sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) tied for 13th overall after carding a score of 76-79—155 and junior Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) finished with a 79-80—159, good for a tie for 24th place.  Senior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) rounded out the Generals with a 28th-place finish (81-79—160).

Washington and Lee returns to action on October 26-27 as it completes its fall slate at the Guilford Tom O’Briant Memorial Tournament held at The Cardinal Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
