W&L Golf Tied for Fifth After Day 1 at Va. Intercollegiate
WINTERGREEN, Va. – The
Washington and Lee golf team shot an opening round 311 and is tied
for fifth overall out of 12 teams at the Virginia Intercollegiate
Golf Championship held at the Stony Creek Golf Club in Wintergreen,
Va.
Tournament host Randolph-Macon holds a seven-stroke lead after the
first day, carding a score of 300. Lynchburg’s Mike Butzgy is
the individual leader after posting a two-under par score of 70 in
round one.
Sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) leads the way
for the Generals in a tie for 12th overall with a 76. Junior Tim
Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) carded a 77 to tie for 14th
overall, while senior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and
junior Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) both logged a
79 to tie for 22nd place. Senior Joe Gibson (Atlanta,
Ga./Westminster) rounded out the W&L players on day one with an
81 that is tied for 32nd place.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Monday with the final
round from Stony Creek.
