W&L Golf Finishes Fifth at ODAC Championship

CAPE CHARLES, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team carded a final round score of 303 to finish in fifth place out of eight teams competing at the 2010 ODAC Championship held at the Bay Creek Resort.

Bridgewater College claimed its first-ever golf championship to end the Generals two-year run as ODAC Champions.  The Eagles shot 312-299-304—915 and were followed by Guilford (314-302-309—925), Roanoke (317-307-306—930), Lynchburg (329-300-302—931), W&L (310-321-303—934), Randolph-Macon (342-305-303—950), Hampden-Sydney (334-313-309—956) and Virginia Wesleyan (340-317-318—975).

Bridgewater’s Mike Redwood (74-76-71—221) and Guilford’s Peter Latimer (79-69-73—221) tied for medalist honors, with Redwood taking home the individual title following a one-hole playoff.

Sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) paced the Generals with an 11th-place finish, carding a score of 75-82-76—233.  Seniors Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) both tied for 12th place.  Gibson shot 79-78-77—234, while Womble fired a three-day score of 78-81-75—234.  Junior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) tied for 22nd with a 78-84-75—237 and senior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) finished tied for 24th with an 81-80-78—239.

Washington and Lee’s season has now concluded, while Bridgewater will receive the ODAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament held May 11-14 at the Hershey Links and Golf Club in Hershey, Pa.
