CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee golf team was in action on Friday with the first round of the Marine Corps Intercollegiate held at the Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The Generals played the more difficult, Par 72 Gold Course, on Friday and tied for ninth out of the 15 teams playing that course with a score of 303. A total of 16 teams played the easier Scarlet Course (Par 70) for a grand total of 31 teams competing in the tournament.
Webber International leads the teams on the Gold Course with a 283, while Guilford headlined the Scarlet Course teams with a 272.
Senior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity), junior Tim Gavirch (Avon, Conn./Westminster) and sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) paced the Generals as each fired an opening round 75. Senior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) posted a 78, while senior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) carded a 79.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they compete on the Scarlet Course. The teams with the top combined scores from the two courses will play for the tournament championship on the Gold Course on Sunday. The teams with the lowest scores will compete on the Scarlet Course.
