W&L Golf Finishes 10th at Callaway Collegiate

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Washington and Lee golf team opened its spring schedule with a 10th-place finish out of 15 teams competing at the Callaway Collegiate Invitational held at the Callaway Gardens Golf Club.

The Generals carded a two-day score of 315-330—645, while Darton Community College finished as the team champion with a score of 301-293—594.  Darton’s Taylor Welborn was the individual champion as he fired a 78-67—145.

Leading the way for W&L was senior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who tied for 31st out of 80 competitors with a 76-81—157.  Junior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) tied for 35th after carding a 76-82—158, while senior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) notched an 82-81—163 to tie for 46th place.  Sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce Ark./Episcopal) and senior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) rounded out the W&L contingent in the tournament.  Anthony tied for 59th (81-86—167), while Langan was 77th overall (86-92—178).

Washington and Lee returns to action on March 19-21 as it competes in the Jekyll Island Collegiate held in Jekyll Island, Ga.
