W&L Golf Splits with JMU in Buck Leslie Challenge

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team split with James Madison in the Buck Leslie Challenge held at the Lexington Golf & Country Club on Monday afternoon.

The Generals took the stroke play portion of the challenge, defeating the Dukes by a score of 290-293.  However, JMU took the match play by a total of 7-1.

During the stroke play portion of the event, the Generals were led by junior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster), who carded an even-par score of 71.  Senior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) notched a 72, while sophomore Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) shot a 73.  Senior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) shot 74 and senior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) carded a 78 for a score of 290.

In match play, Anthony was the lone General to post a victory when he knocked off JMU’s Chris Wellde, 2&1.

Washington and Lee returns to action on April 18-20 as it participates in the ODAC Championship held at the Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles, Va.
