NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2016-17 College Division All-State Men's Basketball Teams on Friday, and junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) garnered second team honors.
Murtha earned First Team All-ODAC honors for the second time in his career this season. He averaged 17.5 points per game, which was fourth in the league. He also led the conference in rebounds per contest at 9.3.
Murtha shot 55.5 percent (172-of-310) from the field, which was third in the ODAC. He started all 28 games for the Generals, while also totaling 43 assists and 22 steals.
During the season, Murtha became the 24th player in program history to score 1,000 points in his career. He now has 1,340 points in 81 games, which is the 12th-best total in program history.
Over his three seasons, Murtha has also made 432 free throws, which is the fourth-highest total in W&L history. Murtha is just the fourth player in program history to earn multiple First Team All-ODAC honors, and the third player in W&L history to receive All-ODAC accolades three times.
This is the second time Murtha has received all-state accolades, as he made the second team and was the Rookie of the Year following the 2014-15 season. Greg Bienemann '08 (he made the first team twice) is the only other player in program history to earn a spot on a VaSID All-State team.
The Generals finished the 2016-17 campaign 13-15 overall and 7-9 in the ODAC. W&L advanced to the ODAC semifinals for this first time since the 2013-14 season.
