W&L Men's Hoops Shoots Past Wesley, 88-81
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team shot 10-of-21 (.476) from three-point range and 20-of-22 (.909) from the free throw line to post an 88-81 win over Wesley in the CNU/Point Plaza Invitational on Saturday evening at the Freeman Center.
The Generals (4-1) and Wolverines (1-3) traded the lead four times and were tied three times in the opening 5:05 of the game, before W&L used an 11-0 run to stretch out to a 19-8 lead with 10:32 to play in the first half. The run was highlighted by four points from senior forward Will Smith (Lothian, Md./Severn) and was capped by a three-pointer by first-year guard Javon McDonald (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Washington and Lee hit 6-of-11 shots from beyond the arc in the first half en route to stretching its advantage to 12 points (39-27) at the halftime break.
Sophomore guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) drilled a three-pointer to start the second half and give the Generals a 15-point lead (42-27) with 19:10 to play in the contest.
Wesley chipped away at the W&L advantage, cutting it to a 53-46 game with 12:39 to go on a jumper by first-year guard J.J. Bryant, but W&L responded with a 15-4 run over the next 5:02 to assume an 18-point lead (68-50) with 7:37 left to play. Junior guard Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W.Va./Spring Valley) scored five points and sophomore forward Larry Whitaker (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) posted four points during the run. The lead remained in double digits until Wesley closed the game with a pair of three-pointers in the last 36 seconds to provide the final margin.
The Generals shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the floor as they assisted on 21 of the 29 field goals. Adkins, sophomore guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) and Smith all recorded career-high scoring totals in the game. Adkins tied his career-best with 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three point range. Gill tallied 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, and Smith totaled eight points and six rebounds. Whitaker tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds, and junior forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three blocked shots.
Wesley was led by sophomore forward David Langan, who scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Junior forward Paul Reynolds posted 13 points, while first-year guard Nick Guidry and senior guard Chris Douglas scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it plays Christopher Newport in the final game of the CNU/Point Plaza Invitational. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 pm.
