EMORY, Va. – Washington and Lee shot 57.7 percent (30-52) from the floor in posting a 73-61 victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC men's basketball on Thursday evening at the King Center.
The game was tied at 25-25 with 5:22 left in the first half, but W&L (12-5, 5-4) used a 10-0 run over the next 3:58 to take a 35-25 lead with 1:24 left before the break. The Wasps (3-15, 0-10) then scored four straight points on free throws following an intentional foul called on first-year forward Jonathan Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) with just under a minute to play as the Generals carried a 35-29 lead into the half.
The Generals began the second stanza with a 14-2 run keyed by a layup and a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) to extend to a 49-31 lead with 16:19 to play. The Wasps cut it to a nine point game (52-43) on a pair of free throws by first-year forward J.T. Murray with 11:13 remaining but a 10-2 W&L run pushed the lead back to 17 points (62-45) with 7:08 left as the Generals cruised to the win.
W&L held a 34-20 advantage on the glass and scored 26 points off of 17 E&H turnovers.
Junior guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) led all scorers with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) totaled a season-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while sophomore center Taylor Gilfillan (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) posted 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
Junior guard Michael Owens paced Emory & Henry with 12 points, while senior forward Terrance Grigg and sophomore guard Malcolm Green notched 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts seventh-ranked Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm contest.
