Generals Fight Off Lynchburg, 80-73, in Men's Basketball

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team had four players score in double figures and the Generals withstood a late charge from Lynchburg College in pulling out an 80-73 win over the Hornets on Sunday evening at the Warner Center.

Sophomore forward Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W. Va./Spring Valley) led W&L with 19 points and his jumper on an inbounds pass under the W&L basket gave the Generals a 74-71 lead with 52 seconds remaining after the Hornets (6-9, 6-10 ODAC) had managed pull to within a single point (72-71).
W&L (11-4, 4-3 ODAC), which had used a 12-5 run to close out the first half and take a 39-35 lead into the break, enjoyed an eight-point margin (62-54) with 6:44 left to play following a layup from sophomore forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park).
However, three-consecutive three pointers from Lynchburg, the last coming from sophomore guard Robby Kaiser (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg), cut the Generals lead to 64-63 with 4:28 left to play.
Trailing 72-67 with 2:01 on the clock, LC received a jump shot from sophomore forward Michael Wims (Standardsville, Va./William Monroe) and a pair of free throws from first-year guard Andrew Simmons (Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) to pull to within one point (72-71) and set up Adkins' aforementioned jump shot.
Following Adkins' jump shot, W&L hit on 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch in defeating Lynchburg to the 10th-consecutive time.
For the game, the Generals shot 50.0 percent (31-62) from the floor and outrebounds the Hornets 35-26. LC also shot 50.0 percent (27-54) from the floor and both teams notched 15 turnovers and 13 assists.
Joining Adkins in double figures for the Generals were junior guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) with 16 points, Ey (14) and first-year forward Larry Whitaker (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), who notched 13 points to go with a career-high 14 rebounds to record his first career double-double.
Senior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) registered seven assists and Adkins also grabbed five rebounds.
Lynchburg, which led by as many as seven points early in the first half, was led by junior forward Nate Campbell (Fredericksburg, Va./CD Hylton), who scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kaiser chipped in 16 points, Simmons totaled 13 points and Wims totaled nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when its hosts Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 pm.
