LEXINGTON, Va. – Four players scored in double-digits as the Washington and Lee men's basketball team cruised to a 75-62 victory over Methodist University in the opening game of the W&L Tournament on Sunday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (8-2) shot 59.3 percent (16-27) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and used a 9-0 run late in the first half for a 39-24 lead at the break.
The W&L advantage grew to 20 points (48-28) on a three-pointer by senior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) just 2:55 into the second stanza and the Generals maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way in posting their third-straight win.
W&L shot 51.7 percent (30-58) from the floor for the game, while holding the Monarchs (3-8) to just 38.1 (24-63) shooting. The Generals also registered a 41-35 edge on the boards.
First-year guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) led W&L with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford), sophomore guard Hans Harris (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) and first-year forward Jonathan Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) all joined Gill in double figures with 10 points each.
First-year forward Bryan Hockaday (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) led Methodist with a game-high 20 points and seven boards on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Mark Jernigan (Greensboro, N.C./Eastern Guilford) added 13 points.
Washington and Lee advances to Monday's championship game where it will face Oneonta State at 6:00 pm.
