FERRUM, Va. – Sophomore forward Lamont King hit a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to lift Ferrum College to a 66-64 victory over Washington and Lee in men's basketball action on Monday evening.
The Generals (5-2) knotted the game at 64-64 with 12 seconds remaining on a basket by first-year forward Jonathan Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford). However, King drew a foul on W&L first-year guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) and hit the game-winning charity tosses.
W&L sophomore guard Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W.Va./Spring Valley) nearly drained a 27-footer for the win at the buzzer, but the shot did not drop and Ferrum improved to 6-0 on the season.
Washington and Lee jumped out to an 11-point lead (19-8) in the opening 10:46 of the game, but the Generals shot just 3-of-12 from the floor and committed five turnovers over the final 9:14 of the half to carry a 24-23 lead into the halftime break.
W&L pushed back out to a 10-point lead (42-32) on a pair of free throws by junior guard Kyle Bond (Boxborough, Mass./Brimmer and May) at the 11:48 mark and the Generals maintained a 49-41 lead with 8:13 to play. Ferrum then went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:46 to take a 53-51 lead with 4:27 remaining.
W&L hit just one of eight free throws at down the stretch, scoring just one point over a span of 3:14 as Ferrum opened a 61-57 lead on a pair of free throws by junior guard Daryl Hart with 42 seconds remaining. The Panthers clung to a 63-59 advantage until Adkins was fouled on a three-point attempt with 17 seconds remaining and hit all three free throws to slice it to a 63-62 game. King went 1-for-2 at the foul line for a 64-62 lead with 15 seconds left, but Rice tied it on his basket with 12 seconds left setting up the decisive final seconds.
For the game, the Generals shot just 18-of-31 (.580) from the free throw line, while Ferrum knocked down 21-of-27 (.780) from the stripe.
Washington and Lee was led by sophomore forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), who totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) contributed 13 points, while senior guard Jason Cimino had nine points and three assists.
Senior guard Keith Crump was the high-scorer for Ferrum, registering 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. Junior guard Marcus Mayo scored 12 points and grabbed six boards, while King totaled 11 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
