HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myer's Park) scored a team-high 14 points and the Washington and Lee men's basketball team withstood a late rally from Haverford in posting a 67-62 win at Gooding Arena on Friday night on day one of the Equinox Challenge.
Aided by three Ford (0-2) turnovers, the Generals (2-0) opened the second half on a 9-0 run to turn a 31-24 halftime lead into a 40-24 advantage by the 17:32 mark. With 15:47 remaining, the Generals still led by as many as 14 points (42-28) before Haverford outscored W&L 19-7 over the game's next 9:11 to creep to within two points (49-47) with 6:38 left to play.
The Fords then cut W&L's lead to just a single point (56-55) on a jumpshot by Cam Baker at the 4:19 mark and following a turnover by junior guard Kyle Bond (Boxborough, Mass./Brimmer and May) had a chance to take their first lead since they were up 13-11 midway through the first period.
However, a missed three-pointer from HC's Joel Michel led to a bucket by W&L first-year guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) to push the W&L cushion back to three (58-55) with three-and-a-half minutes to play.
Haverford was able to once again pull within a single point (63-62) on another Baker basket, this time with just 31 seconds to play, but Bond and first-year forward Jonathan Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) each made a pair of free throws to preserve the Generals' second win in as many games.
As a team, the Generals shot 50 percent (26-52) from the floor and forced the Fords into 22 turnovers. W&L also shot 22 free throws while Haverford made just eight trips to the line.
Ey finished 7-of-9 from the floor and the 14 points tied a career-high. He also grabbed six rebounds. Bond finished with a career-high 12 points and Gill recorded eight points. Rice finished the night with seven points and five rebounds.
Baker scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Fords. Ian Goldberg added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. He also had five rebounds and four assists. Sam Permutt chipped in eight points and a game-high 11 boards.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it wraps up play in the Equinox Challenge by taking on Swarthmore at 3:00 pm.
