LEXINGTON, Va. -- The sixth-seeded Washington and Lee men’s basketball team had four players score in double figures and the Generals knocked off 11th-seeded Emory & Henry, 92-60, in first round action of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (17-9) used a 33-7 run over the final 13:24 of the first half to assume a 43-23 lead at the break and to cruise to their 17th win of the season. The 17 wins mark the highest single-season win total since W&L won 20 contests (20-7) over the course of the 1988-89 season.
The Generals forced 10 E&H turnovers during the decisive run and limited the Wasps to 3-of-12 shooting during that span.
The Generals shot 45.3 percent (26-64) from the field in posting a season-high for points scored and they also outrebounded E&H, 46-25, including 20-6 on the offensive glass.
Senior forward Andrew Payne (Charleston, W. Va./George Washington) led W&L with a career-high 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 shooting from the line. Sophomore guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) matched his career-high with 12 points, senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) chipped in 11 points and junior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) added 10 markers, all in the first half. First-year forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myer’s Park) grabbed a career-high 11 boards and chipped in eight points.
Junior forward Terrance Grigg (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) led the Wasps with 20 points, while sophomore guard Michael Owens (Quinton, Va./New Kent) registered 10 markers. Junior forward Josh Cunningham (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) chipped in eight points and five boards.
With the win, the Generals advance to the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament, where they take on third-seeded and 11th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan (21-4) in a rematch of last year’s title contest. The Generals and Marlins will tip-off on Friday at 8:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
