W&L FIELD HOCKEY DROPS 5-2 DECISION TO MUHLENBERG

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Muhlenberg College rolled out to a 3-0 first-half lead en route to a 5-2 win over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon in Allentown, Pa.

Washington and Lee retaliated with a penalty stroke goal by junior midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) with 24:23 remaining in the second half to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Mules pushed back out to a 5-1 lead on a pair of late tallies.

Northen scored again for the Generals (0-2) with 2:30 remaining in the game, but it was not enough to lift W&L to its first victory of the season.

Muhlenberg (4-2) was led by senior forward Kristen Bruschi, who scored the first three goals of the game. Sophomore forward Jessica Hand added one goal and one assist. Sophomore Lauren Schram and freshman Jennifer McDougall both played in goal for the Mules, posting two saves.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team opened up its 2004 season with a 2-0 loss to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at the W&L turf field.

The Blue Jays (1-2) got on the scoreboard at the 15:43 mark on a goal by sophomore Leah Dudley (Westborough, mass./Westborough). Washington and Lee (0-1) picked up its offense in the second half when it fired off all six of their shots and had all five of its penalty corners but it couldn't find the back of the goal.

Johns Hopkins put the game away when junior Caite Kappel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored off a feed from sophomore Jamie Zubrow (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) at the 55:36 mark.

Washington and Lee junior goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played a half and combined to make five saves.
