W&L FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT, 2-1
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Christopher Newport used two first half goals
and held on to defeat Washington and Lee, 2-1, in field hockey
action on the W&L Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Captains (8-5) jumped on the board with 17:52 to play in
the first half as freshman forward Megan McCreedy (Stafford,
Va./North Stafford) tallied a goal off an assist from junior
midfielder Shannon Lia (Yorktown, Va./Tabb). Christopher Newport
extended its lead to 2-0 with 5:32 to play in the first half as
senior forward Wendy Wilson (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored
off an assist from McCreedy.
The Generals cut the deficit in half with 14:27 to play as
sophomore forward Jessica Lake (Montogomery Village, Md./Watkins
Mill) received a pass from sophomore forward Kelly Taffe
(Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and scored her fourth goal of the
season.
W&L senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston)
played the first 35 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Rosario (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) tallied
one save in the second half. Christopher Newport freshman
goalkeeper Jessica Trosclair (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) made 12
saves to earn the victory.
The loss concludes the season for W&L. The Generals finished
their first season as a varsity sport with an overall record of
3-10, including a 2-7 mark in the ODAC.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite used three second half goals to defeat Washington and Lee, 4-1, in ODAC field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Royals (12-7, 8-1) got on the board first as sophomore defender Kelly Rohrer (Paradise, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) tallied an unassisted goal at the 11:46 mark of the first half. The score would remain 1-0 until EMU freshman forward Valerie Kanagy (Reedsville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite) scored off assists from freshman forward Molly Harrington (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and Rohrer with 20:47 remaining in the game to make the score 2-0.
The Generals (3-9, 2-7 ODAC) cut the score to 2-1 with 15:34 remaining as freshman forward Ali Santoro (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), but EMU would answer again.
Sophomore forward Kristen Moyer (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock) notched a goal with 8:00 remaining on an assist from junior defender Margaret Gearhart (Lebanon, Pa./Annville) and Kanagy scored her second goal of the game with 21 seconds remaining off an assist from Moyer to provide the final margin.
W&L sophomore Laura Rosario (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) posted 11 saves in goal, while sophomore Lauren Hartzler (Newport News, Va./Heritage) recorded four saves for the Royals.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Sunday as it hosts Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest.

Catholic junior forward Stephanie Roselle (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red
Bank Catholic) tallied two goals and sophomore forward Danielle
Deon (Cape May, N.J./Middle Township) notched one for the
Cardinals. Roselle also tallied one assist, as did senior defender
Deanna Feliciani (Norristown, Pa./Merion Mercy) and junior defender
Sondra Pires (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth).
W&L (2-8) avoided the shutout as sophomore forward Jessica
Lake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) tallied the Generals
lone goal of the afternoon with 1:27 to play off an assist from

LEXINGTON, VA. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team put
forth a valiant effort against Lynchburg on Friday evening at the
W&L Turf Field. However, the Generals were defeated by the
19th-ranked Hornets, 1-0.
Lynchburg junior forward Linda Jack (Riva, Md./South River) scored
the only goal of the game with 24:30 to play in the second half off
an assist from junior midfielder Kyla Hoffman (South Portland,
Maine/South Portland).
W&L had a chance to take a 1-0 lead early in the second half,
but failed to score during a flurry in front of the goal.
W&L senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston)
made one save. Lynchburg freshman goalkeeper Joanne Yednock
(Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) made two saves to earn the
victory.
The victory improved Lynchburg to 11-1, 5-0 in the ODAC. The
victory was also a milestone for Head Coach Enza Steele as she
recorded her 300th career victory.

SWEET BRIAR, VA. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
dropped a 3-2 decision at Sweet Briar on Tuesday afternoon.
The Generals fell behind early as Sweet Briar (7-4, 3-3 ODAC)
scored two goals in the first half and carried a 2-0 lead to
halftime. Sophomore forward Ali Buffham (Fallbrook, Ca./Fallbrook)
put the Vixens on the board when she tallied a goal 7:48 into the
game. The Vixens made it 2-0 at the 17:41 mark as junior defender
Courtenay Coalter (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) converted a
penalty stroke.
W&L (2-6, 2-5 ODAC) fell behind 3-0 as Buffham notched her
second goal of the game at 16:07 of the second half. However, the
Generals refused to quit. Freshman defender Erin Rathbone
(Darnestown, Md./Northwest) converted a penalty stroke at the 14:52
mark of the second half to slice the Vixen lead to 3-1. It was
Rathbone's first goal of the season. W&L sophomore foward Kelly
Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) then tallied her
team-leading sixth goal of the season with 6:01 to play to cut the
lead to 3-2, but that's as close as the Generals would get.
W&L senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston)
made seven saves in the losing effort. Sweet Briar freshman
goalkeeper Lori Giguere (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) also made
seven saves.

Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored her team-leading
fifth goal of the season as the Generals broke a four game losing
streak with a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater Saturday afternoon on
the W&L Turf Field.
Taffe scored the goal with 29:47 to play in the second half after
senior link Alison MacQueen (Warrenton, Va./Faquier) sent a cross
from the right corner. For MacQueen, it was her first assist of the
season.
W&L (2-5, 2-4) won for the first time in three home games this
season. Senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass/Weston) did
not face a shot all afternoon as the Generals outshot the Eagles,
20-3. Bridgewater (4-4, 1-3 ODAC) senior goalkeeper Michelle Leach
(East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) made nine saves.

LYNCHBURG, Va.. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at Randolph-Macon Woman's College
on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the WildCats (4-4, 1-1 ODAC) jumped
on the board with 30:36 remaining in the second half as Gina Adler
scored off an assist from Jimena Blanco. The Generals (1-5, 1-4
ODAC) responded less than two minutes later when freshman link Kitt
Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) tallied her first collegiate
goal with 28:49 left in the game.
The game would stay tied until Blanco connected on the
game-winning goal with 4:46 to play in the first overtime
period.
W&L senior goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass./Weston)
played the entire game and made four saves. WildCat goalkeeper Beth
Tinkle also made four saves in notching the victory.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College defeated visiting Washington
and Lee 3-0 in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Frock
Field.
The Lady Indians (2-4), who had not played in two weeks, scored
all three goals in the first half. The first goal came just 26
seconds into the contest when Kristin Pannenbacker scored off an
assist from Taryn Gordon on the game's first shot. Gordon then
followed with a goal of her own at the 23:24 mark scoring off a
shot from the top of the circle.
Catawba closed out the scoring at the 19:55 mark when Kristin
Zweizig scored her fourth goal of the season.
The Generals' (1-4, 1-3 ODAC) defense picked things up in the
second half as Catawba posted just one shot on goal. Catawba
goalkeeper Krystal Griffith made seven saves on the afternoon.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Roanoke junior defender Nicole Yodice
(Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) scored with 3:06 left in
the first overtime period to give the Maroons a 1-0 victory over
Washington and Lee in field hockey action Wednesday afternoon on
W&L Turf Field.
Following a cross from the right corner, the ball was knocked
around near the goal until Yodice was able to get her stick on the
ball and beat W&L goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod (Weston,
Mass./Weston).
W&L (1-3, 1-3 ODAC) outshot the Maroons, 8-5, but failed to
convert several scoring opportunities inside the circle. The
Generals also had four penalty corners while Roanoke (3-2, 3-1
ODAC) had two.
MacLeod finished with four saves for the game. Maroon goalkeeper
Jodi Godbout (Columbia, Md./Centennial) made three saves, including
one with her glove in the overtime period.

The Yellow Jackets got first half goals from junior forward Mara
Friedman (Annadale, Va./Annadale ) with 16:30 to play, junior
midfielder Kathryn Jefferson (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) with
6:58 to play and freshman midfielder Elizabeth Achee (Pilesgrove,
N.J./Woodstown) with 2:32 left in the half.
W&L cut into the lead as sophomore midfielder Kelly Taffe
(Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored her team-leading fourth
goal of the season with 21:50 left in the game. Freshman forward
Grace Barlow (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) notched her
first collegiate goal to make it a one-goal game off an assist from
freshman forward Meredith Walker (Travelers Rest, S.C./Chrust
Church Episcopal). But Yellow Jacket junior forward Carrie
Bittingham (Delmar, Del./Delmar) gave her team a two-goal cushion
as she scored with 4:42 to play.

But the Generals could not tie the game in the final two-minutes of

W&L FIELD HOCKEY PICKS UP FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON
The Washington and Lee field hockey team won its first game as a
full varsity sport on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated host
Hollins, 3-1.
After a scorless first half, Hollins got on the board first when
freshman forward Alice Moss (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored an
unassisted goal just 39 seconds into the second half. The Generals
would trail for the next 15 minutes, but came back with three goals
in less than 10 minutes of play.
Sophomore midfielder Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle)
scored her second goal of the season in the with 19:07 to play in
the half. Taffe came back less than seven minutes later and
recorded her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from
freshman forward Grace Barlow (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country
Day). Sophomore forward Jessica Lake (Montgomery Village,
Md./Watkins Mill) scored the Generals third and final goal with
10:15 remaining. Freshman forward Ali Santoro (Bronxville,
N.Y./Bronxville) got the assist.
Senior Deidra MacLeod (Weston, Mass/Weston) played the first 60
minutes in goal and made seven saves.
Sophomore Lauren Rosario (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) relieved MacLeod and

W&L DROPS SEASON OPENER AT VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey dropped its
first game as a fully-sponsored varsity sport, 2-1, to Va. Wesleyan
on Saturday afternoon.
The Marlins scored the first goal of the game at the 16:15 mark
when Jaclyn Bailey's shot beat W&L goalkeeper Deidra MacLeod
(Weston, Mass./Weston) for the only goal of the first half.
The Generals tied the game at the 48:28 mark as sophomore link
Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored an unassisted
goal. The game stayed tied until Lindsay Mike scored the
game-winner with just under five minutes to play.
MacLeod, who played all 70 minutes in goal, made six saves on the
afternoon.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they travel
to Hollins for a 4:30 pm match.
