W&L Field Hockey Secures Top Spot in ODAC Preseason Poll

W&L field hockey celebrates a goal.

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2018 field hockey preseason coaches' poll on Friday, and defending champion Washington and Lee secured the top spot out of nine schools with 62 points and six first-place votes.

Lynchburg claimed the second spot with 55 points and two first-place votes. Roanoke was third with 51 points and received the final first-place tally. Shenandoah followed in fourth with 45 points and Randolph-Macon (33 points) was fifth.

Bridgewater took the sixth spot with 32 points, and Virginia Wesleyan (23 points), Eastern Mennonite (14 points) and league newcomer Ferrum (9 points) rounded out the poll.

The Generals finished the 2017 campaign 15-5 overall and claimed the second ODAC title in program history. W&L also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Blue and White returns 15 letterwinners from last year's squad and adds six newcomers.

Senior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) headlines the returners for the Generals. She earned NFHCA Third Team All-America honors last year, and also was NFHCA First Team All-South Region, VaSID First Team All-State and the ODAC Player of the Year.

The group of returners also includes junior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and senior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School). Paolano was a Second Team All-ODAC recipient a season ago and Yavalar earned a spot on the third team.

W&L opens the 2018 season on August 31 at Johns Hopkins at 7:00 pm.
