LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team clinched the top seed for the ODAC Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (11-4, 6-0) produced their second consecutive shutout and extended their winning streak to seven straight with the win. It is the program's longest win streak since claiming seven in a row during the 2006 campaign.
Sophomore forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) gave W&L a 1-0 lead just 7:01 into the game when she touched the ball by a defender in the circle and fired a shot in off the left post.
Junior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) made it a 2-0 game a short time later when she took a pass from sophomore defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Visitation Academy) off a penalty corner and fired a long shot past Bridgewater (5-10, 2-3) sophomore goalkeeper Ali Bishop at the 12:37 mark.
The Eagles settled down and controlled possession for much of the remainder of the first half, but BC couldn't push across a goal, as the Generals produced four saves in the first half.
Tucker scored her second goal of the game unassisted at the 39:49 mark for the final margin. She took a lead pass and dribbled into the center of the circle, before striking a high shot that landed in the left side of the cage. For Tucker, it was her 16th goal of the season, tying her for fifth on the school's single-season goals list.
W&L's defense remained stout throughout the second half, allowing just four Bridgewater shots in the final 35 minutes of play. For the game, W&L held a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) finished with four saves for her third shutout of the season. Bishop finished with six saves for the Eagles.
Washington and Lee wraps up regular-season play next Saturday with a 1:00 pm game at Virginia Wesleyan.
