LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team pushed its winning streak to six straight with a 2-0 victory over Roanoke College on Tuesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (10-4, 5-0) controlled play for a large portion of the first half, but were held at bay for much of the opening 25 minutes by Roanoke (11-2, 4-1) sophomore goalkeeper Emma Clark, who notched four saves in the first stanza.
Despite Clark's stellar play, W&L was able to break through at the 27:22 mark when sophomore forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) carried the ball along the end line and sent a short cross in front of goal which was tapped home by senior forward Grace Bowen (Hampton, Va. / Hampton Roads Academy) for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue & White continued to dominate ball possession in the second half and produced another score just 6:37 into the half when junior midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) found sophomore defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Visitation Academy) in the left center of the circle. Hewitt gathered the ball and sent a low shot to the far corner of goal for a 2-0 advantage.
The W&L offense continued to apply pressure on the Maroons and the Generals' defense kept Roanoke from producing a shot on goal the entire half to post their first shutout since a Sept. 16 victory over Elizabethtown (1-0).
Yavalar finished the game with one save for her second shutout of the season. Clark produced eight saves in cage for the Maroons.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it wraps up its regular season home schedule with a 2:00 pm game against Bridgewater.
