Two Late Goals Send W&L Field Hockey Past Dickinson, 5-3

CARLISLE, Pa. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals in a span of 54 seconds late in the second half en route to a 5-3 victory at Dickinson on Friday. Junior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) led the offense with her third hat trick of the season to go with one assist.

The score was tied, 3-3, with the clock winding under 10 minutes in the second half. The Generals (9-4) took the lead (4-3), as Tucker passed to sophomore forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) for her 10th goal of the season with 8:58 left in the game.

Tucker added an insurance goal 54 seconds later off a penalty corner to reach the final margin, 5-3. The late goal gave Tucker her third hat trick of the season. The three hat tricks are tied for the most in a single season in program history. Maggie Waxter '17 also totaled three in 2015.

With her seven points, Tucker moved to fifth on the W&L career points list with 75. Kendall Korte '08 is fourth all-time with 76. Tucker has scored 13 goals in her last five games. Paolano now has 22 goals in her career, which is eighth on the W&L career list.

W&L led in shots for the contest, 18-11, but the Red Devils (6-6) held a 12-8 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the opening 66:49 of the game, stopping five shots. Sophomore Frances Marie Pugh (Richmond, Va./Henrico) saw the final 3:11 of action and did not face a shot. Senior goalkeeper Freddie Bancroft played the full game for Dickinson, making eight saves.  

W&L scored the first goal of the contest in the 12th minute. Tucker had the ball on the far side and then slipped it past the keeper just inside the post. The Red Devils responded with two tallies in a span of 58 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with 5:52 left in the half.

Senior forward Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) evened the game, 2-2, in the 32nd minute. She dribbled into the circle, heading toward the near side. She abruptly stopped and shot across her body, putting the ball inside the far post.

Tucker registered her second goal off an assist from Paolano to give the Blue and White a 3-2 just 6:45 into the second stanza. Dickinson tied the game (3-3) off the stick of sophomore attacker Mia Scott with 20:31 left in the contest.

W&L has won eight of its last nine contests. The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm at the W&L Turf Field.
