LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior forward Annalise Thole (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) tallied the game-winning goal off a feed from junior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School), as the Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated Elizabethtown, 1-0, in overtime on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
With three minutes gone in the extra period, the Generals (2-3) went on a counter attack with Tucker controlling the ball on the far side. She dribbled to the far post with only the goalkeeper in front of her. Tucker passed the ball across the cage, and Thole was sitting on the near post to stuff in the game-winner and send W&L home with a victory.
The tally was the first of the season for Thole and the first game-winning goal of her collegiate career. It also was the first assist of the season for Tucker.
The Blue and White dominated most of the game, registering 21 shots compared to just six for the Blue Jays (3-3). Each team did take five penalty corners.
It appeared the Generals had grabbed a 1-0 lead with 25:46 left in the contest. Sophomore defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) corralled a loose ball off a corner and pushed the ball into the cage. The near official originally signaled a goal, but the far official ruled that the ball was played off a foot. There was a discussion and the umpires decided there was no goal.
Junior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the entire contest and earned her first shutout of the season, while recording three saves. Junior Margo Donlin played the full 73:08 in goal for Elizabethtown and stopped 13 shots.
The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they host Juniata at 1:00 pm.
