W&L Field Hockey Selected First in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2017 field hockey preseason coaches’ poll on Monday, and Washington and Lee secured the top spot out of eight schools. The Generals totaled three first-place votes and 43 points.

Lynchburg claimed the second spot with one first-place vote and 41 points. Defending champion Shenandoah was third with three first-place nods and 39 points. Bridgewater received the final first-place tally and 36 points to take fourth. Roanoke followed in fifth (26 points) and Virginia Wesleyan (17 points), Randolph-Macon (13 points) and Eastern Mennonite (nine points) completed the poll.

The Blue and White concluded the 2016 season 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC. The Generals advanced to the ODAC Tournament Championship game for the second straight year, falling to Shenandoah, 2-0. W&L returns 13 letterwinners from last year’s team and adds eight newcomers.

The Generals bring back three players that garnered All-ODAC accolades last season. Senior midfielder Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) received second team accolades, while senior midfielder Lilly MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft School) and junior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) each made the third team.

W&L begins the 2016 season on Friday, September 1 against John Hopkins at 6:00 pm at the W&L Turf Field.
