W&L Field Hockey Edged by Christopher Newport, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore midfielder Rachael Allshouse scored two goals to lead Christopher Newport past the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 2-1, on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.

The teams were tied, 1-1, at halftime, but the Captains (8-2) tallied the lone goal of the second half with 22:45 left in the game. Off a penalty corner, CNU inserted the ball to the top of the circle. The ball found junior forward Alexa Weaver on the far side. She passed the ball to the center of the circle, and Allshouse knocked it into the cage for the game-winner.

The Generals (6-4) had an opportunity to knot the contest on a corner with seven minutes remaining. Captains' senior goalkeeper Bailey Lien stopped two shots and senior midfielder Sarah Miller made a defensive save to prevent W&L from scoring.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) made nine saves in 70 minutes, but suffered the loss. Lien recorded eight saves, and sophomore defender Brittan Muir also registered a defensive save. W&L led in shots, 21-15, and had a 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Allshouse scored the first goal of the game off an assist from first-year forward Bailey Miller in the 13th minute. W&L tied the game in the 33rd minute. The Blue and White was awarded a penalty stroke, and senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) converted the opportunity by putting the ball in the near side of the cage.

The Generals return to ODAC play on Wednesday, when they play at Randolph-Macon at 7:30 pm.
