LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) tallied one goal and one assist to help lift the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
Tucker set up the game's first goal when she found senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School), who sent a shot home past St. Mary's junior goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson at the 14:44 mark.
The Generals (1-2) upped their lead to 2-0 at the 50:08 mark of the second half when first-year forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) found the cage with a strike from just inside the circle.
The Seahawks (1-3) got on the board at 65:06 when junior midfielder Megan Moore claimed possession during a scrum in front of goal and sent the ball home. However, W&L got a quick insurance goal just 1:21 later on a penalty corner. Senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md. / St. Paul's School) took the corner and found Tucker, who one-timed it home from the top of the circle at 66:27.
W&L held a 15-7 advantage in shots and took nine corners as opposed to just three for St. Mary's.
Sophomore Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) played all 70 minutes in cage and posted three saves for the Generals. Thompson also played the duration in goal and made seven saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Kenyon for a 12:00 pm contest.
