W&L Field Hockey Stymied by No. 19 Catholic, 2-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team lost 2-0 at 19th-ranked Catholic on Saturday, as Cardinals' senior forward Morgan Druce registered a goal and an assist.

Catholic (2-0) scored the first goal of the game with just under 18 minutes left in the first half. After a turnover in the defensive end for the Generals (0-2), the ball was inserted into the center of the circle for the Cardinals. Druce struck a shot from close range that was stopped, but she got her own rebound and pushed it into the back of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.

CUA carried the 1-0 lead into halftime, and held the advantage until the 61st minute. With 9:28 left in the game, Druce passed the ball into the circle, and sophomore forward Graceton Griffth scored from right in front of the goal to push the score to its final margin, 2-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the full 70 minutes in goal for W&L, making seven saves. Junior Sophia Hamilton made three saves for the Cardinals, playing the entire game to earn the victory. Catholic led in shots, 14-4, and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, September 10, when they host St. Mary's (Md.) for a 2:00 pm contest.
