Waxter Propels W&L Field Hockey to 1-0 Win Over Eagles

LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) scored off a penalty corner in the 38th minute to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field. With the victory, the Generals (10-6, 6-1 ODAC) have clinched the top seed in the ODAC Tournament.

The first half of the game was played in the middle of the field, with the two teams combining for just five shots. Early in the second stanza, W&L was awarded a penalty corner with 32:27 left in the game.

Junior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) inserted the ball to first-year forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) at the top of the circle. Tucker passed the ball to Waxter in front of the Eagles' (9-8, 5-2 ODAC) goalkeeper, Marisa Sims (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church). Sims stopped Waxter's first shot, but Waxter gathered the rebound and beat the keeper for the lone goal of the contest.

It marked the 15th tally of the season for Waxter and the 30th of her career. She is now tied for fifth in W&L history for single-season goals with Sallie Armstrong '10.

First-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the entire game in front of the cage and stopped one shot. Sims saved three shots in 70 minutes. Senior midfielder Caroline Fletcher (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) also had a defensive save for Bridgewater. Each team took one penalty corner, while W&L led in shots, 7-5.

This is the first time the Blue and White will be the top seed in the conference tournament since 2005, which is the only time the team has claimed a league championship. The Generals will receive a bye to semifinals of the ODAC Tournament, and will play the winner of the quarterfinal between the fourth and fifth seed.

W&L will host both ODAC semifinals on Friday, November 6, with the times still to be announced. The championship will also take place on the W&L Turf Field on Saturday, November 7.
