LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) notched two goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-0 shutout over Roanoke on Wednesday at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (6-5, 2-0 ODAC) recorded the first goal with 36 seconds left in the opening half. The ball was on the near side and first-year midfielder Kendall Bernard (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) struck a shot from outside the circle toward the goal. Waxter stuck her stick out and tipped the ball as it tracked into the cage.
The Maroons' (5-5, 0-4 ODAC) first-year goalkeeper Heather Schauder (Bryan Athyn, Pa./Academy of the New Church) moved out of the way, thinking the ball went untouched inside the circle. The officials ruled Waxter made contact with the ball, and the Blue and White took a 1-0 lead into the break.
W&L cemented the victory with 21:28 left in the game. Off a penalty corner, junior midfielder Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) passed the ball from the far side of the circle to just in front of the cage. Waxter collected the pass, and then pushed the ball inside the left post to give the Generals a 2-0 advantage. Waxter now has six goals on the season and moved her career total to 21, which is the sixth-highest mark in program history.
First-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) stopped two shots in 70 minutes to earn her first collegiate shutout. Schauder made seven saves, and Roanoke also had a defensive save from first-year defender Stacey Staley (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna).
The Blue and White took 15 shots compared to six from the Maroons, and held a 10-3 advantage in the second half. W&L also led in penalty corners in the contest, 7-4.
The Generals next compete at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
