CHESTERTOWN, Md. — First-year forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Washington College on Wednesday.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, the Generals (2-2) evened the contest off a penalty corner at the 37:12 mark. Junior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) inserted the ball into play, and Tucker fired it from just inside the arc to tally the goal.
W&L took a 2-1 lead just over six minutes later in the half. Tucker dribbled the ball down the field, spun around a defender and blasted a shot into the lower left side for her second goal of the game.
First-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) earned her first collegiate win, as she came on in relief of sophomore Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill). Yavalar played the final 49:54 of the contest, making four saves without allowing a goal. Llewellyn saw the first 20:06 of action. She gave up one goal and stopped four shots.
Senior goalkeeper Sadie Robertson played the entire game for the Shorewomen (1-2). She made one save and allowed both goals. Washington took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Following a penalty corner, junior midfielder Alli Dudley took a shot, which Llewellyn saved, but senior defender Jordan Mitchell gathered the rebound and found the back of the cage to open the game's scoring.
The Shorewomen led in shots, 13-7, including an 11-2 edge in the opening half. The Blue and White took 10 penalty corners compared to eight for Washington.
The Generals next compete on Sunday against McDaniel at 1:00 pm in a neutral-site contest at Bridgewater.
