LEXINGTON, Va. — For the second straight game, the Washington and Lee field hockey team's comeback came up shot, as this time it lost at home to Centre, 2-1, on Saturday.
The Generals (3-13) trailed 1-0 at halftime, and the Colonels (12-2) extended the lead to 2-0 on a penalty stroke at 53:27. A W&L defender was whistled for kicking the ball on the goal line, and first-year defender Nicole Deherde (Hope, N.J./Belvidere) converted the stroke for the score.
With seven minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) had the ball on the far side in the Centre zone. She fired a pass to the center of the cage to senior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate).
Boone controlled the ball four yards in front of goalkeeper Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day), and then beat the goalie for her third score of the season.
Trailing by one goal, the Blue and White had chances to tie the game but couldn't convert. First-year forward Maggie Waxter's (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) took a shot that was wide by a foot with 5:15 remaining, and junior Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) had two shots in the final two minutes. Her first was stopped by Roberts and the second was wide.
Sophomore Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) started in goal for W&L and made seven saves. Senior defender Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and first-year defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) each recorded a defensive save.
Senior forward Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky./Sacred heart Academy) notched the Colonels' first goal 5:13 into the first half. Roberts played the full 70 minutes in goal and had six saves.
