SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Scoring three goals in the first half, the Washington and Lee field hockey ended its nine-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory at Sweet Briar on Tuesday.
The Generals' (2-10, 1-3 ODAC) defense held the Vixen (1-9, 0-4 ODAC) to just three shots, with them all coming in the final two minutes.
Senior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) scored W&L's first goal in the 13th minute. Zusi registered the tally, her second of the season, by tucking the ball inside the left post.
The Blue and White extended the lead to 2-0 just 34 seconds later, as senior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) beat first-year goalkeeper Skylar Rowan one versus one.
W&L scored its third and final goal with 6:36 left in the opening half. First-year forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) notched her first collegiate goal, after collecting the ball in a scrum and putting it in the back of the cage.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) made two saves and earned the shutout. It is her first shutout of the season and the first of her career. Rowan made 12 saves in the loss for Sweet Briar. Senior defender Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) made one defensive save.
The Generals led in shots, 23-3, and penalty corners, 19-4. It was the first shutout for the Blue and White since blanking Roanoke, 1-0, last season.
