W&L Field Hockey Drops a 3-2 Decision to Wilson
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team held a 27-4 advantage in shots, but fell to Wilson College by a score of 3-2 on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
Wilson (5-7) took a 1-0 lead just 6:08 into the game when junior forward Hillary Swartz (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) found the cage unassisted. The Generals (1-10) knotted the game at 1-1 just before halftime when sophomore forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) sent home a deflected pass in front of goal past Phoenix sophomore goalkeeper goalkeeper Gina Weigold (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) at 32:15.
Wilson again forged ahead at the 57:07 mark when senior midfielder Megan Schneck (Bethel, Pa./Tulpehocken) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Alexis Ankro (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee). However, W&L had the equalizer as senior midfielder Victoria Van Natten (Towson, Md./Towson) scored off a feed from senior forward Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) just 2:43 later.
Just as the game appeared to be headed to overtime, Wilson senior midfielder Victoria Whitbred (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) finished a deflected pass in front of goal with 2:16 left in regulation to give the Phoenix the win.
Sophomore Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) played the first 67:44 in goal for the Generals, but did not post a save.
Weigold played the entire contest in cage for Wilson, making 10 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Sweet Briar for a 4:45 pm contest.
