W&L Field Hockey Loses at Kean, 2-1

UNION, N.J. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team struck first, but Kean scored two unanswered goals to defeat the Generals, 2-1, on Saturday.

Senior defender Julie Knodt tallied both of the Cougars' (10-1) goals, with senior forward Stephanie Soares recording two assists.

Sophomore forward Sydney Tomaso (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) gave W&L (1-9) the early lead with a score in the 23rd minute. Senior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) fired a shot on goal, which sophomore midfielder Marissa Robinson saved. Tomaso collected the rebound and knocked it into the cage for the 1-0 lead. It marked her second goal of the season.

Knodt tied the contest just two minutes later off a penalty corner. Soares passed the ball into play, and Knodt blasted it in from the top of the circle.

Knodt gave Kean the lead, 2-1, with 24 seconds left in the opening stanza. Off another penalty corner, Soares found Knodt at the top of the circle, and Knodt beat goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) for the score.

The Generals failed to take a shot in the second half, while the Cougars totaled nine. For the game, Kean led 18-5 in shots and 13-2 in penalty corners.

Axelrod played the full 70 minutes and made six saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie DiCarlo stopped two shots in 70 minutes. First-year defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St Paul's School) notched one defensive save.

The Generals host Wilson on Saturday, October 5, at 1:00 pm.
