Virginia Wesleyan Stymies W&L Field Hockey, 1-0
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — In its first road ODAC game of the season, the Washington and Lee field hockey team lost at Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0, on Saturday.
The Marlins (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored the games only goal in the first half. In the 31st minute, senior midfielder Nikki Cuthbert scored her third goal of the season from five yards out off an assist from senior defender Kelly Mullahy.
The Generals (1-6, 0-2 ODAC) took four shots on goal, but junior goalkeeper Lindsay Baker stopped all four. First-year midfielder Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker's Governor's School) led team in shots with three, including one on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) played the first half in goal for the Generals and did not record a save. Junior Sally Curtiss (Charlotte, N.C./Episcopal) came in at the beginning of the second half at goalkeeper and made three saves. W&L pulled Curtiss for the final 1:44 to add an extra field player in attempts to tie the game.
VWC led in penalty corners, 11-8, and total shots, 13-6. The Generals play at St. Mary's on Sunday at 12:30 pm.
