W&L Field Hockey Suffers 3-1 Defeat to No. 9 CNU
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Facing the ninth-ranked team in the nation, the Washington and Lee field hockey team scored one goal, but lost at Christopher Newport, 3-1.
The Captains (5-0) took control of the contest early, as senior Kelsey Clark scored in the first three minutes. After CNU brought the ball into the W&L (1-4) zone, Clark took control on the near side of the circle. She wound up and fired a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver Colo./Kent Denver School) to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
With just under eight minutes remaining in the half, Clark notched her second goal of the contest to push the lead to 2-0. The Generals responded with their lone score at the 29-minute mark.
Following a scrum in the CNU zone, first-year forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) slung a pass back to junior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth), who found enough space to hit the back of the cage. It was Purpura's first goal of the year and the first career assist for Waxter.
The Captains added one more goal in the second half. CNU led in shots, 29-2, and penalty corners, 15-2. Axelrod finished with six saves, and was helped by her teammates as senior defender Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale), sophomore defender Emily Doran (Somers, Conn./Suffield Academy) and first-year defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) each recorded a defensive save.
The Generals return home for a Tuesday game against Lynchburg at 6:30 pm.
