YORK, Pa. – Senior forward Kailey Brewer scored two goals an assisted on another to lead the York College field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday at Kinsley Field.
The Spartans (1-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 23:30 of the game on a pair of unassisted tallies. Senior forward Jillian Brezgel opened the scoring at the 10:53 mark and first-year midfielder Sydney LaMarsh followed with a goal at the 23:30 mark.
The Generals (1-3) retaliated in the 44th-minute when senior midfielder Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina / Holy Trinity) scored unassisted to make it 2-1.
York went up 3-1 at the 47:29 mark when Brewer assisted on a goal by junior midfielder Nancy Saylor, and then Brewer made it 4-1 with a goal off an assist by sophomore midfielder Holly Martin in the 59th-minute.
Senior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J. / Kent Place) sliced the Generals' disadvantage to 4-2 with a goal at the 62:08 mark, but Brewer scored her second goal of the day just 3:38 later for the final margin.
For the game, the Spartans held a 29-8 advantage in shots and a 20-1 edge in penalty corners.
Sophomore Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver School) stopped 11 shots in goal for the Generals, while sophomore Abby Baker posted two saves for York.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday, when it travels to Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest.
