LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee scored two goals in the final 13:08 of regulation and notched the game-winner just 2:34 into overtime as the Generals knocked off Shenandoah, 3-2, in ODAC field hockey action on Tuesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
The Hornets held a 1-0 lead until the 56:52 mark when W&L sophomore midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) re-directed a shot from junior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) past SU junior goalkeeper Sarah Clare (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) to knot the game at 1-1.
Shenandoah quickly claimed the lead back as junior forward Liz Grover (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) scored unassisted just 5:23 later, but the Generals again evened the contest when Boone found the cage unassisted with just 4:01 left in regulation.
The Generals (4-8, 2-3) then claimed the victory when junior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) found the cage off a feed from first-year forward Claire Townsley (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) at the 72:34 mark.
Boone finished with one goal and one assist to lead the Generals' offense, while senior Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) tallied seven saves playing the duration in goal.
Clare posted three saves in the cage for Shenandoah.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday as it travels to McDaniel for a 4:00 pm contest.
