SALEM, Va. — With junior defender Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) scoring the game's lone goal, the Washington and Lee field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory at Roanoke on Tuesday.
The win was the Generals' (3-5, 1-1 ODAC) first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conferencethis season, while the Maroons (1-7, 0-2 ODAC) suffered their second league loss.
The game's only goal came 15:56 into the first half on a penalty corner. Junior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) put the ball in play, and senior midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) collected and fired the ball toward the goal just outside the striking circle. Hampsch deflected it in front of the cage, and the ball popped over the right shoulder of goalkeeper Darian Shuker for the lone score. It marked Hampsch's first goal and points of the season, and the firsts of her collegiate career in her 41st game.
W&L controlled the ball for most of the contest with 21 corners compared to three for Roanoke. The Generals took 11 shots with four on goal, while the Maroons had seven shots with three on goal. Washington and Lee had three players lead the team in shots with two in Hampsch, junior midfielder Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) and junior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate).
First-year goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and senior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) each played a half for Washington and Lee. Axelrod made one save in the first half, while Kyne made two in the second.
The Generals next play a non-conference game on Saturday, September 29, at Wilson at 2:00 pm, before returning to league play on Wednesday, October 3, at Lynchburg.
