W&L Field Hockey Falls to No. 9 Mary Washington, 8-1
LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team allowed four goals in each half and lost to ninth-ranked Mary Washington, 8-1, on Tuesday night. The Generals dropped to 2-4, while the Eagles (7-0) remained unbeaten.
Sophomore defender Amy Abernathy (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) opened the scoring less than four minutes into play, as her point-blank shot on a Jenna Steele (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) assist found the cage.
Steele then scored the first of her two goals less than four minutes later. First-year defender Haley Kane (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) stretched the lead to four with two goal before the end of the first half. She scored on a penalty corner with 13 minutes remaining, and on a pass from senior midfielder Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) off a corner with 10 minutes left.
The Generals allowed four more goals in the second half, but would score the final tally of the contest. With less than nine minutes remaining, senior midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) collected the ball in front of the cage, and recorded her second goal of the season.
First-year goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) started and played the full 70 minutes for W&L and finished with nine saves.
The Generals open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Friday, September 21, when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 4:00 pm game.
