W&L Felled by Randolph-Macon, 5-2, in Field Hockey
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team ended its 2011 campaign with a 5-2 loss to Randolph-Macon at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead just 10:40 into the contest on first-year Candice Stefanic's (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) fifth goal of the season, W&L (6-10, 2-6) saw the Yellow Jackets (8-7, 5-3 ODAC) come storming back with four straight tallies to assume a 4-1 lead by the 42:49 mark.
First-year Rachael Gardner began the R-MC blitz with an unassisted tally at the 21:03 mark and sophomore Lauren Seal made it 2-1 Yellow Jackets with an unassisted goal just before the half at 33:51.
Seal then connected with first-year Carrie Jacobs for a pair of goals at 36:08 and 42:49 to give Macon a commanding 4-1 lead.
Randolph-Macon capped the scoring at 58:55 when junior Courtney Owens took a pass from sophomore Mikalea Rumley and beat W&L junior Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor).
Sutherland and classmate Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) split time in goal for the Generals. Kyne played the first half allowing two goals, while Sutherland played the final 35:00 and made two saves with three goals allowed.
Junior Nicole Woodworth played all 70:00 for the Yellow Jackets and made six saves with two goals allowed.
