Roanoke Nips Generals, 2-1, in Field Hockey
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Roanoke College sophomore Kelly Finn (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) scored at the 66:52 mark to propel the Maroons to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Washington and Lee field hockey team on Wednesday night at the W&L Turf Field.
Finn's come came on a pass from first-year Mariel Hunt (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) in the game's waning moments and clinched a spot in the upcoming ODAC Tournament for the Maroons (5-10, 3-3), while W&L (6-9, 2-5) was mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the tournament. For Roanoke, it was the first win over W&L since 2003, as the Generals had won each of the last eight meetings.
W&L took a 1-0 lead into the break courtesy of a goal from senior Lizz Dye (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) on a well-executed penalty corner at the 28:57 mark. Senior Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) and sophomore Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) assisted on the play.
In the second half, it took RC just over 20 minutes to find the game-tying goal when Hunt scored off a feed from senior Lee Sheldon (Darien, Conn./Darien) at the 55:42 mark to make it a 1-1 game setting up Finn's game winner.
W&L outshot RC, 13-9, including 9-4 in the first half, but senior Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, Mass./Nauset Regional) made seven saves for the Maroons and sophomore Laura Stavetski (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) and junior Lichele Pace (Needham, Mass./Needham) each had a defensive save as well.
Junior Kirsten Kyen (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) played all 70:00 in goal for the Generals and made three saves.
The Generals wrap up their 2011 campaign on Saturday when they host Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm.
