W&L Field Hockey Tripped Up by EMU, 2-1
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team saw a second-half rally come up just short as it fell, 2-1, to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon at the EMU Turf Field.
EMU (8-7, 4-1) tallied a pair of goals sandwiched around the halftime break to take a 2-0 lead. Valerie Landis scored off a feed from Camille Williams at the 31:33 break for a 1-0 Royal lead, then Jenessa Derstine deposited a pass from Jenna Longenecker at the 42:52 mark for a 2-0 lead.
The General (5-8, 2-4) cut into the EMU lead to make it a 2-1 game at the 55:40 mark when senior Lizz Dye (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored off penalty corner at the 55:40 mark. Sophomore Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) assisted on the play.
Despite several shots down the stretch, W&L was unable to find the equalizer as EMU held on for the win.
For the Generals, juniors Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) split time in goal. Kyne started and allowed one goal with one save, while Sutherland played the final 35:00 and made seven saves with one goal allowed.
Mary Beth Danaher played all 70:00 in goal for the Royals and allowed one goal with won save as EMU outshot W&L 22-5.
W&L returns to action on Monday when it hosts Sewanee at 3:30 pm at the W&L Turf Field.
