SWEET Briar, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win at Sweet Briar on Tuesday afternoon.
The Generals (5-7, 2-3 ODAC) put together one of their best offensive performances in several weeks, outshooting the Vixens (3-8, 0-5) 24-2 and generating 17 penalty corners to SBC's three.
Sophomore Alex Hensleigh (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) put W&L up 1-0 late in the first half when she took a pass from senior Lizz Dye (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) and beat Sweet Briar's Madeline Wilson at the 30:00 mark.
In the second half, junior Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) made it 2-0 at the 43:36 mark when deposited a feed from senior Lindsey Edmonds (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) into the back of the cage.
W&L made it 3-0 in the final 10 minutes courtesy of a marker from first-year Anna Kathryn Barnes (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) on a pass from fellow first-year Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) at 65:53.
Wilson, who was under constant pressure from the Blue and White made 14 saves on the day. W&L junior Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) played all 70:00 in the cage for the Generals and made one save.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 4:00 pm contest.
