LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team yielded three second-half goals in falling, 4-0, to No. 6 Lynchburg at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
Despite outshooting the Generals (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) 13-1 in the first half, LC's (9-1, 3-0 ODAC) only first-half tally came on an unassisted tally by first-year Katie Kline (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) at the 12:57 mark. W&L junior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) came up with five saves in the opening 35:00 as the Generals hung with the sixth-ranked team in the country.
LC pushed its lead to 2-0 when senior Kristina Morris (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) found junior Lindsey Leonard (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in front of the net for a goal at the 45:13 mark.
At the 51:42 mark, senior Deanna Smith (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) made it a 3-0 contest with an unassisted tally and the Hornets added a tally at the 69:09 mark for the final 4-0 score.
The Hornets outshot W&L 29-5 and held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners. Kyne finished with six saves for the Generals in 70:00 of play. Senior Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played all 70:00 and made one save.
The Generals return to action next Saturday when they host Liberty at 2:00 pm.
