WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) scored 1:40 into the second overtime period of propel the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon.
Benedetti's unassisted tally, her third of the season, came on W&L's ninth shot of the game and evened the Generals' record at 4-4 on the season, including 1-1 in the ODAC. Shenandoah dropped to 3-7 overall an 0-2 in the league with the loss, its fourth in a row.
Despite being outshot 8-5 in regulation, including 6-2 in the first half, W&L managed to keep the Hornets off the scoreboard thanks to five first-half saves from junior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven), who made eight saves overall to record her first shutout of the season.
W&L's offense found a rhythm in the extra time, out-shooting SU 4-2 in the two overtime periods, with Benedetti ultimately netting the game-winning goal.
Sarah DeLuca and Maria Payne each recorded two shots on goal to lead SU and Sarah Clare played all 86:40 in the cage, making five saves and allowing the lone goal.
W&L returns to action on Saturday at 1:00 pm when it hosts sixth-ranked Lynchburg beginning at 1:00 pm.
