LEXINGTON, VA. – The Bridgewater field hockey team scored two early goals, and Washington and Lee was unable to recover as the Eagles claimed a 3-1 victory on Friday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
Bridgewater (3-4, 1-1 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest at the 8:27 mark as sophomore midfielder Betsy Joslyn (Tappaannock, Va./Saint Margaret's) settled a pass from junior midfielder Kelly Ryan (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and sent the ball past W&L junior goalkeeper Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) for the 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles added their second goal just over three minutes later, when junior defender Jennifer Bateman (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) collected a rebound from a penalty corner shot to push the lead to 2-0.
W&L (3-4, 0-1 ODAC) cut the lead in half with 22:55 showing on the scoreboard, as first-year forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) recorded an unassisted tally with 9:05 remaining in the opening stanza to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Eagles, where it remained through halftime.
BC tallied its final goal 5:36 into the second half with sophomore defender Rebecca Lindgren's (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) unassisted marker, giving the Eagles the final 3-1 victory and first ODAC win of the season.
Sutherland and classmate Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) split time in the cage, combining for 11 saves. Bridgewater senior goalkeeper Taylor Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) played all 70:00, recording five saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, as they continue ODAC play against the conference's newest member, Shenandoah. Game time is slated for 5:00 pm in Winchester.
