FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team snapped a three-game skid with a 4-3 win over Rhodes on Saturday afternoon at The University of Mary Washington.
The Generals (2-3), who had been outscored 12-2 in the their previous three games combined, snapped out of their slump in a big way, tallying a season-high four goals from four different players.
Rhodes (2-1) jumped on the board first, as Katie Faucher scored off a feed from Kat Simpson just over 2:00 into the game. However, the Generals knotted the game at 1-1 when Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) netted an unassisted tally at the 14:52 mark.
W&L quickly made it 2-1 on goal from senior Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) under 5:00 minutes later. The Generals would maintain their one-goal lead into the break.
Just after halftime, the Lynx tied the game at 2-2 on a Taylor Mills penalty stroke at the 37:03 mark.
W&L junior Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) pushed the Blue and White in front, 3-2, with her first goal of the season at the 51:19 mark and first-year Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) made it 4-2 W&L at 61:30.
Purpura's goal proved to be the deciding tally as Rhodes tacked on a final goal, this time on a Mills feed to Libby Jones, at 65:41 for the final margin.
Both teams used a pair of goalies. For W&L, junior Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) started and played the opening 35:00. She allowed one goal and made three saves.
