W&L Field Hockey Drops 7-1 Decision to Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team struck first but couldn't hold on as it fell to Mary Washington, 7-1, on Friday evening in Fredericksburg.
W&L (1-3) wasted no time finding the back of the cage, as sophomore defender Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) collected a rebound to score an unassisted goal at the 3:47 mark.
However, the Eagles (3-0) went on to score seven unanswered goals to claim the final 7-1 winning margin.
Junior midfielder Lisa Charney started the scoring for UMW with consecutive goals at the 20:20 and 24:55 marks to push its advantage to 2-1. Senior forward Morgan Jones and sophomore forward Caitlin Baker each added a goal as the Eagles took a 4-1 lead into the break.
Mary Washington added three more goals in the second half, including a tally from Charney for her third goal of the contest as they claimed the final 7-1 margin. Junior midfielder Florence George contributed three assists on the night for the Eagles, while Jones finished with a goal and two assists.
As a team, UMW outshot the Generals, 27-5, while also holding a 19-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) played the entirety for W&L, recording nine saves. Mary Washington junior Claire Gianelle and first-year Emily Badis shared time in the cage, combining for two saves. Gianelle allowed the lone goal while claiming the win.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they face Rhodes at 4:00 pm in their second game at the Mary Washington Invitational.
